About the Founder

Helping Business Owners Make One of the Most Important Financial Decisions of Their Lives

Most business owners sell a company only once. The process is unfamiliar, emotionally demanding, and financially significant. Choosing the right advisor can have a lasting impact on the outcome—not only on the purchase price, but also on the terms of the transaction, the tax implications, the future of employees, and the owner's legacy.

For more than 20 years, Anja Bernier has helped business owners, investors, and private equity firms navigate these decisions with clarity, objectivity, and confidence. As Managing Director of Efficient Evolutions, Anja advises clients on company sales, acquisitions, business valuations, and exit planning. Her clients value her ability to combine analytical rigor with practical business judgment, helping them make informed decisions throughout the transaction process.

Unlike many advisors who focus exclusively on closing deals, Anja believes her first responsibility is to provide objective advice. Sometimes that means recommending a sale. Sometimes it means delaying a transaction until the business is better positioned. And sometimes it means advising a client to walk away from a deal that is not in their best interest.

Her role is not simply to complete transactions—it is to help clients achieve the right outcome.

A Different Perspective

Anja's approach to mergers and acquisitions has been shaped by a career that spans five countries and three continents. Born and raised in Germany, Anja is bilingual in English and German and proficient in Dutch. She graduated cum laude from a joint international business program offered by the University of Applied Sciences Dortmund (Germany) and the Amsterdam School of Business (The Netherlands), earning dual degrees in a trilingual academic environment.

Before founding Efficient Evolutions in 2005, she held senior marketing, business development, and corporate strategy positions with several of Europe's leading consumer products companies, including Kraft Foods and Dannon (Danone). Later, while reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer of a privately held, multi-billion-dollar European company, she was entrusted with establishing the company's U.S. subsidiary from the ground up. That assignment included developing growth strategies, evaluating acquisition opportunities, negotiating transactions, and building a business in one of the world's most competitive markets.

Those experiences continue to influence her work today.

Having worked on both the corporate buyer side and the advisory side of transactions, Anja understands not only how sellers think, but also how sophisticated buyers evaluate risk, opportunity, and value.

More Than an M&A Advisor

One of the qualities that distinguishes Anja from many transaction advisors is her expertise in business valuation.

She is both a Certified Business Appraiser (CBA) and a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA)—credentials that reflect advanced training in valuation methodologies, financial analysis, and the economic drivers of business value. This combination of transaction experience and valuation expertise allows clients to benefit from advice that is grounded in both market realities and rigorous financial analysis. Whether evaluating offers, negotiating purchase price adjustments, or preparing a business for sale, understanding value is at the center of every important decision.

While every industry has its own characteristics, successful transactions are built on the same fundamentals: understanding value, identifying the right buyers or acquisition targets, anticipating risks, and negotiating from a position of knowledge.

A Trusted Advisor

Clients often describe Anja as thoughtful, candid, analytical, and exceptionally responsive.

She believes that trust is earned through preparation, honesty, and a willingness to tell clients what they need to hear—not simply what they hope to hear.

Because Efficient Evolutions intentionally remains a boutique advisory firm, every client works directly with Anja throughout the engagement. There are no layers of junior professionals between the client and the advisor responsible for the transaction. This hands-on approach allows clients to benefit from senior-level expertise at every stage of the process.

Beyond the Transaction

Anja believes that every business represents years—often decades—of hard work, personal sacrifice, and commitment.

For many owners, selling a company is not simply a financial transaction; it is the transition of a life's work.

She approaches every engagement with that perspective, recognizing that the decisions made during the transaction process will often shape a client's future long after the closing documents have been signed.

Her objective is straightforward:

To help every client make informed decisions, maximize long-term value, and complete transactions with confidence.

A recognized thought leader in the valuation and M&A community, Anja is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences and has served as a guest lecturer on mergers and acquisitions, entrepreneurship, and international business at institutions including Boston University. She has been interviewed by Inc. Magazine, business radio programs, and industry publications on topics related to business valuation, company sales, and entrepreneurship. Anja has also provided expert witness testimony and consulting in matters involving business valuation, financial damages, and business operations.

Her commitment to the valuation profession is reflected in her long-standing leadership within the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts (NACVA). She served on the Board of the NACVA Massachusetts Chapter from 2015 through 2024 and was elected Chapter President in 2020, a role she held until November 2024. Since then, she has been a regular presenter at NACVA conferences. Earlier in her career, she served as Assistant Editor of Business Appraisal Practice, the professional journal of the Institute of Business Appraisers.
